Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop Launch Sparks Global Frenzy, Store Closures

The highly anticipated collaboration between Swatch and luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet, the Royal Pop collection, has ignited unprecedented demand, leading to chaotic scenes, store closures, and a global frenzy. The innovative pocket watch, a fusion of Audemars Piguet’s iconic Royal Oak design and Swatch’s modular concept, prompted crowds to gather in massive numbers at Swatch stores worldwide, forcing some locations to temporarily shut down due to public safety concerns.
A Fusion of Icons Causes Chaos
The Royal Pop collection, officially unveiled on May 8th, merges the esteemed DNA of Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak, a mechanical watch icon typically commanding prices upwards of $30,000, with Swatch’s playful and affordable modular watch ethos. However, the collaboration deviates from traditional wristwear, presenting a 40mm Bioceramic pocket watch designed for versatile wearability. Swatch Group stated in a press release that the collection aims to ‘change the way we wear watches,’ allowing them to be worn ‘around your neck, on your wrist, in your pocket, attached to a handbag, and more.’
The launch, which occurred on Saturday, May 16th, saw immense crowds at select Swatch stores globally. This surge in demand, fueled by both dedicated collectors and resellers seeking quick profits, overwhelmed security at several shopping malls. Videos circulated on social media depicting pushing, shoving, and police intervention to manage unruly crowds in cities including New York, Atlanta, London, Paris, and Milan. In response to the pandemonium, Swatch Group issued a statement urging customers not to rush to stores, assuring them that the Royal Pop collection would be available for ‘several months.’
Store Closures and Safety Measures
The overwhelming turnout necessitated the closure of approximately 20 out of 220 Swatch stores worldwide. Swatch Group cited ‘long queues of interested customers’ and insufficient mall security as primary reasons for the disruptions. In some instances, law enforcement deployed tear gas and other measures to disperse crowds, particularly in France, where officers used tear gas grenades and spray outside several Swatch boutiques. Police also intervened in London, where stores were temporarily closed, and similar scenes were reported in the Netherlands and other parts of Asia and the Middle East.
“To ensure the safety of both our customers and our staff in Swatch stores, we kindly ask that you not rush to our stores in large numbers to acquire this product,” Swatch Group stated on social media. The company later confirmed that the situation had largely normalized after the initial launch day, drawing parallels to the 2022 launch of the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch, which also experienced significant public demand.
Product Details and Resale Market
The Royal Pop collection features eight distinct models, named to incorporate the number eight in various languages, referencing the octagonal case and eight screws of the Royal Oak. The watches are constructed from Swatch’s signature Bioceramic material and house a new manually wound version of Swatch’s Sistem 51 mechanical movement, offering a 90-hour power reserve. Two models, Làn Ba and OTG ROZ, are Savonnette-style with a crown at 3 o’clock, while the other six are Lépine-style with the crown at 12 o’clock.
The Lépine models retail for $400, while the Savonnette models are priced at $420. An optional calfskin leather lanyard, available in three lengths, is sold separately for $45. Despite the accessible retail prices, the Royal Pop watches quickly appeared on resale platforms like eBay with prices soaring into the thousands of dollars, highlighting the strong resale market and the speculative interest surrounding the collaboration.
Expert Opinions and Future Outlook
Retail experts suggest Swatch’s marketing strategy, leveraging exclusivity and the appeal of collaborations, has been highly effective in generating hype, especially among younger consumers who appreciate the ability to acquire an Audemars Piguet-inspired product at a fraction of the usual cost. However, some critics question the brand’s decision to launch exclusively in-store, potentially exacerbating the chaotic situations. Others believe Swatch may have strategically amplified the demand to boost sales.
Despite the launch day pandemonium, Swatch Group emphasized the collection's global appeal, reporting billions of views across social media. The company maintains that the Royal Pop is not a limited edition and will remain available for purchase in select stores for an extended period, suggesting that the intense demand may subside as supply becomes more consistent. The incident underscores the powerful, and sometimes volatile, influence of brand collaborations and resale culture in the modern luxury market.
