Sophisticated Jewelry Heist Crew Sentenced in California

Multiple Members Receive Jail Time for Elaborate Burglary
Three individuals have been sentenced for their involvement in a sophisticated, multimillion-dollar jewelry heist that targeted businesses in Simi Valley, California, last year. The Ventura County District Attorney’s office announced the sentences, emphasizing the high level of planning and execution involved in the crimes. The crew is believed to be connected to an international network specializing in organized commercial burglaries.
Details of the Heist
The elaborate burglary occurred on May 25, 2025. The crew gained entry into Dr. Conkey’s Candy & Coffee Shop by cutting through the roof, using ladders and ropes to rappel inside. They disabled surveillance cameras and stole cash from a safe. Following this, they bored a hole through the adjacent wall to access 5-Star Jewelry & Watch Repair. Inside the jewelry store, they broke into another safe, making off with a significant amount of jewelry, bullion, cash, and valuable heirlooms belonging to customers. The jewelry store owner estimated the losses to be between $2 million and $2.5 million, representing the life’s work of his father.
Evidence presented by prosecutors indicated meticulous planning. The defendants allegedly purchased rope at Home Depot and conducted surveillance of the target businesses days before the heist. They were observed inspecting the shared walls between the businesses, assessing surveillance cameras, and even mimicked using a spray can, which police believe was intended to disable security measures.
Sentencing and Charges
On February 20, 2026, Heidi Trujillo, 26, was sentenced to four years in the Ventura County Jail. Manuel David Ibarra, 38, and Camilo Antonio Aguilar Lara, 32, each received four years and four months. A fourth crew member, Sergio Andres Mejía-Machuca, 27, had his sentencing hearing continued to March 26, 2026.
The defendants pleaded guilty to felony counts. Ibarra, Lara, and Mejía-Machuca each pled guilty to conspiracy to commit commercial burglary and possession of stolen property. Trujillo pled guilty to conspiracy to possess stolen property. All four admitted to special allegations, including excessive loss exceeding $1 million, theft committed in concert with others, and that the crimes demonstrated planning, sophistication, and professionalism.
Additionally, Ibarra and Mejía-Machuca pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit commercial burglary and felony vandalism in connection with a separate burglary at Simi Valley Pawn Brokers on May 23, 2025, where no items were taken.
Law Enforcement Response and Recovered Items
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko stated, egular. The Ventura County will not tolerate organized burglary crews that treat our communities like targets. If you engage in this kind of conduct, you will face significant consequences.’
During arrests and the execution of a search warrant last summer, authorities recovered a substantial amount of evidence. This included jewelry and high-end watches matching the stolen inventory from 5-Star Jewelry, cash, commercial burglary tools, a firearm, large pieces of art linked to international jewel thief groups, diamond testers, lockpicking tools, collapsible ladders, and rope. Some of the defendants were allegedly wearing the stolen jewelry at the time of their arrest. Incriminating videos recorded by the crew on their phones were also recovered.
The investigation involved coordinated efforts with local, state, and federal agencies, utilizing surveillance footage, license plate reader data, and digital forensics.
Restitution and Future Proceedings
Ibarra, Lara, and Trujillo were ordered to pay $4 million in restitution to 5-Star Jewelry. The amount of restitution for other victims is yet to be determined. The sentencing for Sergio Andres Mejía-Machuca is scheduled for March 26, 2026.
