Silvia Furmanovich, a São Paulo-based designer renowned for her cultural explorations through jewelry, has launched a new collection that pays homage to the spirit of experimentation found in the Art Deco movement. The collection, aptly named 'Art Deco', draws parallels between the historical era and Furmanovich’s own creative philosophy, which emphasizes the dialogue between craftsmanship, materiality, and ornament.

A Nod to the Roaring Twenties

Furmanovich was drawn to the Art Deco movement, which flourished from the 1920s to the 1940s, for its embrace of modernity, its fascination with global cultures, and its belief in the evolution of craftsmanship alongside a rapidly changing world. The movement’s name originates from the influential 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, where artists famously incorporated both precious and unconventional materials such as lacquer, coral, mother-of-pearl, shagreen, steel, glass, and wrought iron into their designs.

Mirroring this blend of the artisanal and industrial, Furmanovich’s collection features a diverse array of materials that have become her signature in fine jewelry. The approximately 100-piece collection showcases techniques like straw marquetry, Japanese Shibayama inlay, mirror, black palm wood, coral, mother-of-pearl, abalone, and iridescent beetle wings. Geometric patterns, inspired by Art Deco motifs such as chevrons, mosaics, and spirals, are brought to life through these varied elements. For instance, fan-shaped earrings crafted from 18-karat yellow gold incorporate mirrors, garnets, diamonds, and onyx, with mirrored surfaces serving as a subtle reference to the chrome popular in the era. Straw marquetry, also known as enchapado de tamo, adds depth and movement to the collection’s designs.

Cultural Dialogue and Timeless Luxury

Beyond the direct stylistic references, Furmanovich also weaves in nods to Egyptomania, Japonisme, textiles, ceramics, and decorative arts, alongside her perennial inspiration from nature. This approach transforms the collection into more than just an aesthetic tribute; it becomes a meditation on the essence of contemporary luxury.

“By combining ancestral techniques, rare materials, and contemporary perspectives, the collection becomes both a tribute to the optimism and curiosity of the [Art] Deco movement and a meditation on what luxury can represent today: artistry, cultural dialogue, innovation, and the enduring desire to transform the world through beauty,” stated the brand.

Availability and Recognition

The 'Art Deco' collection ranges in price from approximately $6,800 to $18,800. It debuted at the prestigious Couture show and is set to launch on the Silvia Furmanovich website and in select U.S. stores, including Bergdorf Goodman, starting in September. Additionally, a trunk show hosted by Moda Operandi through August 7th offers clients the opportunity to pre-order pieces from the collection.

Silvia Furmanovich’s commitment to innovative craftsmanship and unique material usage has not gone unnoticed. She was recognized with the 2026 Gem Award for Jewelry Design, underscoring her significant contributions to the field.

Founded on a fascination with craftsmanship, a love of natural materials, and meticulous attention to detail, the family-run business, with Furmanovich at its helm, continues to explore rich global cultures through its distinctive creations. Her design ethos, honed since establishing her business in 1998 and opening her first boutique in 2009, blends her meticulous upbringing—learning from her goldsmith father and great-grandfather who crafted sacred adornments for the Vatican—with her wide-ranging passions.
