Signet Jewelers has appointed Jeffrey Gennette, the former CEO of Macy's Inc., to its board of directors. The move, effective May 6, brings over four decades of retail leadership experience to the jewelry giant as it aims to enhance its brands and digital presence.

A Wealth of Retail Experience

Gennette's career at Macy's began in 1983 as an executive trainee. He ascended to the role of CEO in 2017, a position he held until his retirement in 2024. During his tenure, he also served as chairman for six years. His extensive background encompasses merchandising, marketing, digital transformation, and store operations, areas Signet Jewelers identifies as crucial for its long-term growth priorities and capital allocation decisions.

Signet CEO J.K. Symancyk expressed enthusiasm about Gennette's appointment. 'Jeff's experience leading one of the largest omnichannel retailers in the U.S. brings powerful insight to Signet,' Symancyk stated. 'As we continue to strengthen our brands, enhance our digital and store experiences, and grow share in a dynamic retail environment, Jeff's guidance, passion for jewelry, and expertise will be a tremendous asset to our team and our board.'

Board Committee Appointments and Strategic Focus

Gennette has been appointed to two key board committees: the Human Capital Management and Compensation Committee and the Finance Committee. These roles will involve guiding Signet's long-term growth initiatives and capital-allocation strategy. The company highlighted that Gennette's expertise will be particularly valuable as Signet refines its 'Grow Brand Love' strategy, focusing on improving brand positioning, inventory management, and service-led offerings in a competitive market that includes players like Tiffany and Blue Nile.

Helen McCluskey, chair of Signet's board, emphasized the board's commitment to ongoing refreshment. 'Jeff is a highly respected retail leader who brings a deep familiarity with the jewelry category and a proven track record of leading large, complex consumer businesses through transformation,' McCluskey said. 'His perspective on building brands, engaging customers across channels, and driving operational excellence will be invaluable as we advance our strategy.'

Board Refreshment and Transition

The addition of Gennette marks a significant step in the board's evolution. Longtime director Nancy Reardon, who has served on the board since March 2018, will be stepping down at the company's annual general meeting on June 26. Reardon's departure after an eight-year tenure, during which she provided 'steady leadership, sound judgment, and thoughtful counsel,' is part of the board's plan for ongoing refreshment. Her departure will bring the total number of directors to 11.

Investors are observing this board transition closely. Signet Jewelers' stock (NYSE:SIG) has experienced fluctuations, with shares showing mixed performance over the past year and year-to-date. Gennette's strategic insights are expected to be instrumental in navigating the dynamic retail landscape and driving future value for the company and its shareholders.
