Rob Bates, a prominent figure in jewelry industry journalism, has announced the launch of his new independent publication, The Jewelry Wire. This move marks the end of a 28-year career at JCK, where Bates served as news director and became a widely read reporter and commentator.

A New Chapter for a Respected Voice

Bates, who has nearly 35 years of journalism experience, including time at National Jeweler and 12 editorial awards to his name, aims to provide the global jewelry trade with essential news, reporting, and commentary. The Jewelry Wire will publish four to five newsletters weekly, offering original reporting, analysis from industry experts, and curated resources to help professionals navigate the evolving market.

The publication intends to foster dialogue between trade insiders, outside experts, and its readership. “The jewelry business has never been more complex or more interesting,” Bates stated. “With The Jewelry Wire, I want to create a publication that is reader friendly, well informed, and independent, with news and conversations that help the trade navigate the challenges ahead.”

Bates will continue his involvement with JCK, co-hosting The Jewelry District podcast and contributing articles. This allows him to leverage his extensive experience while building the publication he envisioned. “I’ve reported on the jewelry business for nearly 35 years,” Bates said. “This is an opportunity to take that experience and build the kind of publication I’ve always wanted to create.”

Industry Insight and Independent Reporting

The Jewelry Wire’s content will feature major industry news, original reporting, and analysis from Bates and other voices in the sector. Each edition will also include curated links and insights to keep readers abreast of key developments. The platform plans to invite contributions from various professionals to ensure a diverse range of perspectives.

Initially, The Jewelry Wire will offer free subscriptions, with a paid tier planned for future development. This approach ensures accessibility while providing avenues for more exclusive content. Bates’s long-standing relationship with the industry, including his signature weekly roundups formerly known as Diamond Shavings at JCK, has provided him with a deep understanding of the trade’s needs.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

Bates’s final edition of Diamond Shavings for JCK marked a significant milestone, reflecting on 19 years of weekly roundups and 28 years at the publication. He expressed gratitude to his JCK colleagues and the publication for their support over the years, emphasizing his continued connection to the JCK family.

The launch of The Jewelry Wire signifies a new era for industry news, led by a journalist renowned for his insight and dedication. The publication aims to be a vital resource for professionals seeking to understand and adapt to the dynamic jewelry market.
