Petra Diamonds Reports Q3 Boost Driven by Major Blue Diamond Sale Amid Market Weakness

Q3 Sales Surge Despite Market Challenges
Petra Diamonds Limited experienced a substantial uplift in its third quarter sales, primarily driven by the sale of a significant 41.82-carat blue diamond. Despite this high-profile transaction, the company noted persistent price weakness in the broader diamond market, with smaller-sized goods being particularly affected.
In the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, Petra sold a total of 781,797 carats, marking a 58 percent increase from the 494,237 carats sold in the second quarter and a 40 percent rise compared to the 558,651 carats sold in Q3 of the previous fiscal year. The company reported dollar sales of $68 million, a 39 percent increase quarter-on-quarter and a 64 percent increase year-over-year.
While sales volumes and total revenue saw notable increases, Petra’s average realized price per carat experienced a slight decline. The average price dropped 11 percent from $98 per carat in Q2 to $87 per carat in Q3. However, on a year-over-year basis, the average price per carat rose by 17 percent.
Impact of Market Dynamics on Mines
The company attributed the quarter-on-quarter dip in average realized price to a 15 percent reduction in like-for-like prices across all diamond sizes. This trend has impacted both of Petra’s mines, Cullinan and Finsch. However, the product mix from the Cullinan Mine was able to partially mitigate the overall reduced prices, a benefit not experienced by the Finsch mine.
Consequently, the average price per carat for rough diamonds from the Finsch mine, which predominantly yields smaller stones, fell by 22 percent quarter-on-quarter. In contrast, the Cullinan Mine saw a smaller price per carat reduction of 9 percent.
Revised Pricing Guidance and Market Outlook
The sustained weakness in the market for smaller diamonds, coupled with ongoing global uncertainties, has prompted Petra to revise its pricing guidance for the Finsch mine downwards. The forecast for Finsch’s average price per carat in FY 2026 is now projected to be between $60 and $70, a decrease from the previous estimate of $75 to $85 per carat.
The pricing guidance for the Cullinan Mine remains unchanged at $85 to $105 per carat, despite its year-to-date average price standing at a strong $118 per carat. This decision reflects the company’s cautious outlook amidst continuing global uncertainties and market softness in smaller diamond segments.
The Exceptional Blue Diamond Sale
A significant contributor to Petra’s Q3 performance was the sale of a 41.82-carat Type IIb blue diamond, described as possessing exceptional color and clarity. This remarkable stone was unearthed at the Cullinan Mine in January. Petra sold the diamond via a competitive tender process.
Under the terms of the sale agreement, Petra received an initial upfront payment and will retain a significant economic interest in the profits generated from the sale of the polished stone, a process expected to take approximately 12 months. Due to confidentiality agreements, the buyer’s identity and the precise sale price remain undisclosed at this stage.
A key aspect of the agreement is that the blue diamond will be cut and polished in South Africa, supporting the country’s beneficiation sector. Petra expressed optimism that this arrangement will leverage considerable expertise in diamond manufacturing and sales to maximize the stone's value.
Leadership Commentary
Vivek Gadodia and Juan Kemp, Joint CEOs of Petra Diamonds, commented on the results: “While the overall market remains challenging, especially in the smaller-sized segments, recovering a sizeable, exceptional quality diamond demonstrates the quality of Cullinan Mine’s significant resource. The agreement we have reached on this blue stone will enable leveraging considerable experience in the manufacturing and sale of polished diamonds to extract maximum value for Petra while also allowing for the cutting and polishing of this stone in South Africa and we look forward to seeing the ultimate outcome of this magnificent gem.”
