End of an Era for Iconic Downtown Dallas Location

The historic Neiman Marcus store in downtown Dallas, a cornerstone of the city’s retail landscape since 1907, will close permanently on September 30, 2026. Saks Global, the parent company, confirmed the decision this week, stating it is final and part of a broader strategy to optimize the company’s store footprint in alignment with customer demand and preferences.

The closure marks the end of a more than a century-long run for the retailer in its original downtown location. Neiman Marcus was founded in downtown Dallas in 1907 by Herbert Marcus, his sister Carrie Marcus Neiman, and her husband, A.L. Neiman. The current building, a significant landmark, replaced the original store after it was destroyed by a fire in 1913, opening its doors in 1914.

Strategic Realignment Amidst Bankruptcy

Saks Global acquired Neiman Marcus at the end of 2024 and has been navigating a Chapter 11 bankruptcy process. The decision to close underperforming locations, including the downtown Dallas store, is a key part of the company’s restructuring efforts to address debt and secure a stronger future. The company aims to emerge from bankruptcy this summer.

Geoffroy van Raemdonck, CEO of Saks Global, emphasized that the decision, while difficult, was based on extensive evaluation of customer preferences and demand. He noted a significant shift in the retail landscape of Dallas, with the NorthPark Center location experiencing substantially higher sales – more than 10 times that of the downtown store. “The customer has decided where she or he wants to access the Neiman Marcus brand,” van Raemdonck stated.

Focus Shifts to NorthPark Center

Saks Global plans to concentrate its resources and customer focus on the Neiman Marcus store at NorthPark Center in North Dallas. The company intends to infuse elements celebrating the downtown store’s rich history into the NorthPark location. This includes plans to reimagine the Neiman Marcus Cafe into The Zodiac Room, a nod to the historic dining destination at the downtown store. The bridal salon, a traditional service offered at the downtown location, will also be managed from NorthPark, with plans to confirm a long-term strategy for serving brides.

Community and Employee Impact

The impending closure has been a subject of discussion and negotiation for months. City officials and community leaders had actively worked to find ways to preserve the historic downtown store. Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert expressed disappointment but acknowledged the city’s ongoing partnership with Saks Global to invest in the transformation of the NorthPark store. “While this decision is not the outcome we worked toward, the city will continue to partner with Saks Global and our community to pursue new opportunities at this landmark site together,” Tolbert said.

For employees impacted by the closure, Saks Global has stated that transfer opportunities to nearby locations will be offered where possible. Eligible employees may also qualify for appropriate separation packages. The company is also assessing the future of its corporate offices located within the downtown store building, looking for suitable locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

A Symbol of Downtown Challenges

The closure of the Neiman Marcus flagship comes at a challenging time for downtown Dallas, which has seen several major companies and projects relocate or scale back. The departure of the iconic department store adds to a narrative of downtown’s evolving retail environment and the broader headwinds faced by the traditional retail industry.
