The Natural Diamond Council (NDC) has officially designated April 8 as World Diamond Day, a new global initiative aimed at celebrating the emotional and cultural significance of natural diamonds. This day is envisioned as a collective movement, powered by user-generated content, to highlight the authentic stories and enduring value of natural diamonds.

A Celebration of 'Diamond Moments'

World Diamond Day encourages individuals and organizations across the jewelry industry—from designers and manufacturers to retailers and consumers—to share their personal diamond stories on social media. These stories can encompass a wide range of experiences, including engagements, anniversaries, family heirlooms, the journey of a diamond from mine to market, and the positive impact of diamond mining on communities, education, and conservation. Designers are also encouraged to showcase their craftsmanship and creations.

Participants are invited to post photos or short videos on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok, using the hashtags #WorldDiamondDay and #NaturalDiamonds. The NDC has provided a dedicated online portal with a toolkit, participation guidelines, and customizable social media assets, including the World Diamond Day logo, to facilitate engagement.

Significance of the Date

The choice of April 8 for World Diamond Day holds symbolic meaning. April is the birthstone month for diamonds, and the number eight is significant across many cultures, often representing infinity, balance, and lasting prosperity. When turned sideways, the number eight becomes the infinity symbol, a nod to the 'a diamond is forever' sentiment.

In a world where imitation is so often championed, natural diamonds remain powerful symbols of authenticity. Formed over billions of years, natural diamonds mark life’s most meaningful milestones, and this initiative offers the industry an opportunity to reinforce that message through real stories and shared experiences.

According to Nicolas Chrétien, a founding member of the World Diamond Heritage Board (WDHB), which conceived the idea for World Diamond Day last year, the date is crucial for establishing a memorable occasion for the industry.

Industry Collaboration and Vision

The NDC emphasizes that World Diamond Day is intended to be more than just a marketing campaign; it is envisioned as a unified moment for the entire natural diamond industry. NDC CEO Amber Pepper stated, “Now more than ever, the power of the natural diamond industry lies in its ability to come together with a unified voice. World Diamond Day represents a rare and meaningful moment, one that no other category can so authentically galvanize.”

The World Diamond Heritage Board (WDHB) transferred oversight of World Diamond Day to the NDC, viewing it as a gesture to place the Natural Diamond Council at the center of a shared initiative. Chrétien noted that the WDHB developed the concept and prepared a campaign that has garnered support in 40 countries, with an estimated 3.6 million potential followers.

The first World Diamond Day, slated for April 8, is described as a “soft launch” designed to build momentum and encourage participation from all sectors of the diamond world. The NDC calls for companies to invite their teams, partners, clients, and communities to join in sharing their authentic diamond stories.
