Jewelry Segment Outperforms as Conglomerate Faces Geopolitical Headwinds

LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton reported a 6 percent year-over-year decrease in first-quarter sales, reaching €19.12 billion ($22.48 billion). This decline was primarily attributed to a challenging geopolitical environment, particularly the conflict in the Middle East, which significantly impacted demand in the region during March. Despite the overall dip, the conglomerate’s jewelry and watches division demonstrated notable resilience, with revenue in this segment falling by only 2 percent year-over-year to €2.44 billion ($2.87 billion), while showing a 7 percent organic growth.

Impact of Middle East Conflict and Saks Bankruptcy

Cécile Cabanis, LVMH’s CFO, detailed the effects of the geopolitical situation, stating that the conflict in the Middle East had a tangible impact on regional demand. LVMH temporarily closed its stores in affected areas, and demand saw a substantial drop, in some malls falling as much as 70 percent. While Saudi Arabia locations proved more resilient, tourist-dependent areas like Dubai were heavily affected. Cabanis expressed confidence that wealth has not disappeared and some sales might be recaptured elsewhere. The company also noted a $150 million impact on Q1 sales due to the bankruptcy of Saks Global.

Jewelry Maisons Shine with Iconic Collections

LVMH highlighted an excellent performance from its jewelry brands, which include Bulgari, Chaumet, Repossi, Fred, and Tiffany & Co. Specific iconic lines proved to be major drivers of success. Tiffany & Co. experienced a strong start to the year, fueled by robust momentum in its fine jewelry collections. Its ‘HardWear,’ ‘Knot,’ and ‘Sixteen Stone’ lines continue to resonate with consumers. The brand’s high jewelry collections also saw significant growth. LVMH is pleased with the successful ongoing transformation of Tiffany & Co., noting that renovations, including its New York flagship ‘The Landmark,’ are yielding tangible outperformance.

Bulgari also reported strong Q1 growth, with notable momentum across all regions. Its ‘Serpenti’ and ‘Tubogas’ lines performed exceptionally well, and the brand introduced its new ‘Eclettica’ high jewelry and watch collection, alongside the ‘Vimini’ line. Chaumet continued to expand its ‘Bee de Chaumet’ line and partnered with World Wildlife Fund France. Fred celebrated its 90th anniversary with new additions to its unisex ‘Force 10’ collection.

Mixed Performance Across Divisions and Regions

While jewelry and watches performed well, LVMH’s fashion and leather goods division, its largest, saw a 2 percent decline in constant currencies. The Perfume & Cosmetics division also faced challenges, with sales sinking 6 percent on a reported basis, though flagship brands like Parfums Christian Dior and Guerlain showed positive signs. Conversely, the Selective Retailing division, bolstered by a strong performance from beauty retailer Sephora, achieved 4 percent organic revenue growth, with Sephora gaining market share globally and expanding its presence, particularly in the UK.

Geographically, the U.S. market started the year well with a 3 percent organic sales increase. Europe saw a 3 percent decrease, with resilient local demand partially offsetting lower tourist spending. Asia, excluding Japan, posted strong growth of 7 percent. The Middle East, after a positive start, experienced a negative impact of approximately 1 percent for the quarter due to the conflict.

Outlook and Strategic Focus

LVMH expressed vigilance yet confidence for the year ahead, emphasizing its focus on brand development through sustained innovation, investment, and a commitment to quality and selective distribution. The company plans to leverage its diverse businesses and geographic balance to further solidify its global leadership in high-quality products. While acknowledging the disrupted geopolitical and economic environment, LVMH remains committed to its strategic goals, aiming to navigate the complexities and capitalize on opportunities for future growth.
