AI Dominates Discussion at Premier Industry Event

The future of artificial intelligence and its potential to reshape commerce took center stage at Jewelers Mutual Group’s third annual “Conversations” leadership retreat. Held from April 10-12, 2026, at The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, California, the event convened jewelry industry leaders, executives, retailers, and marketers to explore innovation, evolving customer expectations, and long-term industry resilience.

The overarching theme for the 2026 retreat was ‘The Transformative Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Jewelry Industry.’ Sessions delved into how AI is revolutionizing customer engagement, streamlining operations, and driving growth strategies. Jeff Weiner, a returning expert in future trends, curated the conference agenda, ensuring a forward-looking perspective.

Innovators Share Cross-Industry Insights

A key feature of the retreat was the inclusion of speakers from outside the jewelry sector, offering fresh perspectives on business and branding. This year, the featured speaker was Mike Cessario, founder and CEO of the rapidly growing canned water brand, Liquid Death. Launched in 2019 and now valued at an estimated $1.4 billion, Cessario shared insights into purpose-driven branding and disruptive innovation.

Cessario discussed how Liquid Death has leveraged unconventional, often humorous, marketing strategies—akin to those of unhealthy consumer brands—to build a strong, recognizable brand in the beverage market. He emphasized that in a world saturated with digital content, entertainment and genuine connection are paramount for capturing attention. His brand’s approach, focusing on creating engaging content rather than traditional advertising, has helped it stand out and encouraged word-of-mouth growth.

“The Conversations retreat was created to give industry leaders the opportunity to step back, think differently, and engage with peers in a meaningful way,” stated Mike Alexander, President at Jewelers Mutual. “The jewelry industry continues to evolve, and creating space for thoughtful dialogue and collaboration is essential to shaping what comes next.”

AI as a Tool, Not a Replacement

While AI's capabilities, including automated tasks and rapid content creation, were showcased, a recurring theme was the irreplaceable value of human elements in the jewelry industry. Speakers highlighted that AI cannot substitute for human presence, trust, taste, storytelling, and craftsmanship.

Dan Olsen, a product management consultant, demonstrated the power of ‘vibe coding,’ a software development approach using AI assistants that allows non-technical users to create applications. He successfully designed mock-ups and built versions of a ring-sizing app in mere minutes using AI tools, illustrating AI’s potential to democratize creation.

However, Olsen and others stressed that AI should be viewed as a tool to augment human capabilities. Jeff Weiner, director of new business at AI market research firm Evidenza, noted, “AI cannot replace presence, trust, taste, story, emotion, and craft.” He suggested that AI excels at automating tedious tasks, such as drafting follow-up emails or product descriptions, thereby freeing up professionals to focus on more strategic and creative endeavors. “I firmly believe AI is not going to replace you, it’s going to make you more formidable,” Weiner added.

Jeff Mack, VP of marketing at enterprise AI solution firm Reejig, echoed this sentiment, suggesting that innovative companies are integrating AI through HR, focusing on how it can enhance, rather than replace, human work. “AI is not here to replace people; it’s here to replace work,” Mack stated.

The Enduring Value of Human Connection and Authenticity

Despite the technological focus, the retreat underscored the growing importance of authentic, human-centric experiences. Hallie Spradlin, director of visionary at Future Snoops, observed a cultural shift away from hyperconnectivity towards a desire for disconnection and a return to tangible, human-made value. She noted a trend among younger generations experimenting with simpler technology and prioritizing time in nature, reflecting a broader movement towards ‘slow tech.’

This emphasis on authenticity extends to consumer behavior, with a growing appreciation for unique pieces, secondhand treasures, and the stories behind them, often surpassing the desire for conventionally coveted items. The retreat itself, with its intimate scale and face-to-face interactions, was praised for fostering genuine professional relationships and providing a valuable platform for dialogue in a luxurious, engaging atmosphere.

Optional excursions, ranging from outdoor adventures to creative workshops like glass blowing, were offered to deepen attendee connections and facilitate reflection outside the main sessions. Jewelers Mutual’s “Conversations” retreat continues its commitment to supporting the jewelry community through leadership development and fostering experiences that advance the industry.
