The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has appointed John Cowley as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO), effective April 6, 2026. Cowley, a seasoned executive with over 30 years of global financial and operational experience, takes over from David Tearle, who is retiring on June 30 after a distinguished 17-year tenure as GIA’s CFO. Tearle will remain with the institute in an advisory capacity until his retirement.

A New Chapter for GIA's Financial Leadership

GIA President and CEO Pritesh Patel expressed confidence in Cowley’s appointment, stating, “John Cowley is an impressive and important addition to GIA’s executive team. His international experience, financial expertise, and disciplined leadership make him exceptionally well-suited to the role.” Patel also acknowledged Tearle’s significant contributions, noting, “GIA owes much of its financial stability to David Tearle. He developed a skilled and dedicated team, built robust processes across all GIA locations and put his financial acumen, professional and collegial demeanor, and dry wit in the service of our mission.”

John Cowley's Extensive Background

John Cowley brings a wealth of experience to GIA. He is a Chartered Accountant and holds degrees in Modern History from Oxford University and Law from the University of London. Prior to joining GIA, Cowley served as the CFO of Solvd, a global software services company based in California. His career encompasses 25 years of progressive leadership roles within international software and medical technology firms, as well as nonprofit and public sector organizations. He has a proven track record of strengthening financial oversight, transparency, and stakeholder trust in highly regulated environments, having served on audit committees and led finance and operations functions.

“I am eager and excited to join GIA,” said Cowley. “Bringing my depth of experience to what is for me a completely new industry is very exciting. I look forward to working closely with, listening to, and learning from my new colleagues.”

David Tearle's Legacy at GIA

David Tearle joined GIA as CFO in 2009. During his 17-year tenure, he provided exemplary financial stewardship and guidance, significantly supporting GIA’s global expansion and the development of innovative laboratory and educational services and programs. The institute credits Tearle with establishing financial processes and teams that have contributed to the organization's operational stability worldwide. Tearle also served on the board of directors and as treasurer of the Jewelers Security Alliance from 2013 until 2026.

As Tearle transitions to retirement, his continued involvement in an advisory capacity will ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities to Cowley.
