Gemfields Reports 72% Revenue Surge Driven by Strong Auction Performance

Interim Results Highlight Robust Auction Success Despite Operational Hurdles
Gemfields Group, a prominent miner and marketer of coloured gemstones, has announced a significant 72% increase in its first-half revenue for 2026. The company reported a total auction revenue of $102.9 million for the six months ending June 30, a substantial rise from the $60 million generated in the corresponding period of 2025. This surge in revenue was primarily driven by the success of its ruby and emerald auctions.
Mixed Performance from Mining Operations
While auction results were strong, the company's mining operations presented a more varied picture. The Montepuez Ruby Mine (MRM) in Mozambique continued to face challenges with the recovery of premium-grade rubies, yielding a lower output of 0.025 carats per tonne. Gemfields stated that its focus remains on improving grade outcomes by targeting areas believed to contain higher-grade material. A new processing plant at MRM, known as PP2, has begun contributing to production volume and is expected to reach full commission capacity later in the year.
In contrast, the Kagem emerald mine in Zambia maintained healthy premium emerald production during the first half. However, overall operating costs were impacted by several factors, including higher fuel prices, exchange rate pressures, and increased mining activity.
Financial Standing and Future Outlook
As of June 30, Gemfields reported a net debt of $44.2 million, before accounting for auction receivables totaling $33.3 million. The company is scheduled to release its full interim financial results on September 25, where more detailed commentary on the first half is expected.
Despite the strong revenue figures from auctions, Gemfields shares experienced a decline. In Johannesburg, the stock was down 2.9% on Thursday at 68 rand cents, marking a 51% decrease over the past 12 months. Similarly, in London, shares fell 9.1% to 2.50 pence, with a 12-month change of down 53%.
