Gemfields Emerald Auction Nets $26.8 Million Amidst Market Caution

Gemfields has announced that its latest auction of higher-quality emeralds achieved a total revenue of $26.8 million. The sale, which took place from May 4 to May 21, saw a significant portion of the offered lots sold, underscoring continued demand for exceptional gemstones despite prevailing global economic uncertainties.
Strong Sales Performance
The auction achieved an impressive sell-through rate, with 97 percent of the lots offered finding buyers. Specifically, 36 out of 37 lots were sold, and by weight, an even higher 99 percent of the rough emeralds were sold. The average price realized per carat stood at $146.08.
Market Dynamics and Demand
Adrian Banks, Gemfields’ Managing Director of Product and Sales, commented on the market conditions. He stated, “This auction result demonstrates that, while demand for higher-quality emeralds remains stable, the market is presently exercising a degree of caution, influenced by ongoing geopolitical tensions and prevailing macroeconomic uncertainty.”
Despite this caution, Banks highlighted the resilience of the top-tier market: “Competition and pricing for the top-tier emeralds remained particularly strong, reflecting the rarity and continued desirability of exceptional gems.”
Economic Headwinds
The appreciation of the U.S. dollar against other currencies presented a challenge. Banks noted that the volatility of the Indian rupee, which depreciated by approximately 10 percent against the U.S. dollar since Gemfields’ previous higher-quality emerald auction in September 2025, has created an “additional headwind” for many customers.
Mine Origin and Auction Process
The rough emeralds auctioned were mined at the Kagem mine in Zambia, a venture where Gemfields holds a 75 percent ownership stake, with the remaining 25 percent owned by the Industrial Development Corporation of Zambia. Proceeds from the sale are set to be fully repatriated to Kagem, with royalties payable to the Zambian government based on the full sales prices achieved.
The auction was conducted via a specialized online platform, enabling sealed-bid participation from customers across various jurisdictions. Prior to the sale, potential buyers had the opportunity for private, in-person viewings of the auction lots in Bangkok.
Comparison with Previous Auctions
The $26.8 million generated by this auction compares to $32.0 million from the September 2025 higher-quality emerald auction. In that previous sale, all lots were sold at an average price of $160.78 per carat. Previous results also include $35.0 million in May 2024 and $43.7 million in June 2023. Gemfields acknowledges that auction mixes vary in size, color, and clarity, making direct comparisons challenging.
Ruby Auction Schedule Adjustments
In separate news, Gemfields has reviewed its ruby auction schedule for the remainder of 2026. This decision stems from lower-than-expected production at its Montepuez Ruby Mining operation, concerns about market liquidity for rubies, and continued subdued demand from China. The company anticipates a smaller-than-usual ruby auction in June, focusing on selected grades aligned with current market demand. Gemfields plans to provide further updates on its ruby auction schedule and overall outlook following the June auction.
