The Diamond Council of America (DCA) has announced the launch of its ‘Second Spark’ Workforce Initiative, a program designed to connect veterans and parents re-entering the workforce with careers in jewelry retail. This initiative aims to address the significant and growing talent gap currently facing the jewelry industry.

Addressing Industry Challenges

The jewelry sector is experiencing workforce challenges due to factors such as retirements, an aging labor pool, and heightened competition for retail talent. The ‘Second Spark’ Initiative seeks to create a new pipeline of trained professionals by tapping into a pool of highly capable and motivated individuals who possess strong transferable skills.

“We’re proud to launch Second Spark as a unique solution to two important needs—creating career opportunities for veterans and returning parents, and strengthening the future workforce of our industry,” said Annie Doresca, President & CEO of DCA. “It’s a program built on both purpose and practicality.”

Program Structure and Benefits

The program will launch with an inaugural cohort of up to 100 participants. The curriculum spans 8-10 weeks and is centered around four DCA courses, leading participants to earn their DCA Diploma in Gem and Jewelry Sales. Beyond academic training, participants will receive comprehensive support including resume and interview coaching, mentorship, and dedicated job-placement assistance with retail partners.

Graduates of the ‘Second Spark’ program will also have the opportunity to pursue the Certified Sales & Service Professional (CSSP) credential offered through Jewelers of America.

Support and Expansion

The ‘Second Spark’ Workforce Initiative is supported by the JCK Industry Fund. The DCA is actively seeking additional partners to broaden the program’s reach and impact. The initiative leverages DCA’s established educational infrastructure to align employer needs with a skilled and motivated workforce, thereby strengthening the future of jewelry retail.
