New Strategy Targets Digital Natives with Immersive Experiences

Claire's is embarking on a significant rebranding effort aimed at connecting with Gen Alpha, the generation born between 2010 and 2024. The retailer's new summer campaign, titled 'A Girl SMR at Claire's,' is designed to resonate with these digital natives by translating their affinity for sensory experiences and online trends into a tangible, in-store environment. This initiative marks a pivotal moment for Claire's, representing its first major campaign since its acquisition by private equity firm Ames Watson following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

The 'Summer Sensory Shop' and ASMR Appeal

At the heart of the campaign is the 'Claire's Summer Sensory Shop,' a curated selection of products designed to engage all five senses. This collection includes an array of items such as slime toys, squishies, candy, scented products, and distinctive jewelry. The campaign highlights fashion trends popular with younger demographics, featuring layered necklaces, ear and wrist stacks, charm and initial necklaces, beaded bracelets, hand chains, rings, and nautical-themed pieces. Claire's, long known for its piercing services and costume jewelry for young girls and tweens, is leaning into current trends like blind box collectibles and 'squishy hunting,' where consumers seek out rare stress toys.

A key feature of the campaign is the integration of ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) elements. Recognizing Gen Alpha's engagement with ASMR videos and tactile play, Claire's is introducing ASMR recording stations in select stores. These stations allow shoppers to create their own sensory content, bridging the gap between online trends and real-world interaction. 'Gen Alpha is rewriting the rules of modern girlhood, and Claire's is evolving with them,' said Michelle Goad, Claire's chief brand officer. 'This new era is about creating a world where girls can explore, express, and experience joy through every sense.'

Expanding Reach Beyond Physical Stores

Claire's is also broadening its presence across platforms frequented by Gen Alpha. The brand plans to establish a footprint on Coverstar, an age-appropriate social media platform positioned as an alternative to TikTok. Furthermore, Claire's will leverage creator partnerships, particularly on YouTube, to reach younger audiences through product collaborations and in-person experiences. A significant activation will include a co-branded pop-up at VidCon, the annual convention for video content creators, scheduled for June.

A New Chapter Post-Bankruptcy

The 'A Girl SMR at Claire's' campaign signifies Claire's commitment to reimagining its brand for the next generation. This evolution follows its acquisition by Ames Watson, which acquired the North American business for $140 million in September, stabilizing the retailer after its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in August. The firm's intervention helped preserve a substantial portion of Claire's store network, which currently stands at approximately 900 stores across the U.S. and Canada, positioning it as a unique mall retailer for this demographic. Despite recent news of closing all 154 U.K. and Ireland stores, the U.S. and Canadian operations are focused on this new chapter. The campaign is the first major initiative under the new ownership, aiming to foster a safe, sensory-rich environment that encourages creativity and celebrates girlhood in its diverse forms.

Engaging a Powerful Consumer Group

The strategic shift toward Gen Alpha is driven by the demographic's significant spending influence, with a Teneo study indicating they already impact roughly $255 billion in U.S. spending. Projections from Mintel suggest Gen Alpha's global spending power could reach $5.5 trillion by the end of the decade. Claire's is also expanding its focus to tweens, a slightly older segment within Gen Alpha, recognizing that kids aged 8 to 14 shape a considerable portion of household spending decisions. The retailer aims to create a 'closed-loop ecosystem' where in-store experiences drive content creation and encourage repeat visits, positioning Claire's as a 'playground for modern girlhood' that embraces participatory experiences.
