Citizen is commemorating a significant milestone: 50 years of its revolutionary Eco-Drive technology. This pioneering innovation, which harnesses any light source to power a watch and eliminate the need for disposable batteries, has transformed the watchmaking industry. To mark this occasion, Citizen is launching the new Eco-Drive Photon collection and hosted an event at the iconic Guggenheim Museum in New York.

A Legacy of Light-Powered Technology

Introduced in 1976, the Eco-Drive technology was a response to the growing awareness of energy conservation spurred by the 1973 oil crisis. At a time when battery-powered quartz watches dominated the market, Citizen pioneered a sustainable alternative. The initial Crystron Solar Cell watch, the world's first light-powered analog watch, converted light into usable energy stored in a rechargeable power cell. This breakthrough significantly reduced battery waste, offering a continuous power source as long as the watch was exposed to light.

Jeffrey Cohen, President of Citizen Watch America, highlighted the brand's enduring leadership in this field. 'For 50 years, Eco-Drive has led the world in light-powered watchmaking technology,' Cohen stated. 'We are the first, the market leader, and the 'market maker' of this entire category of watches. Others have tried and failed, but not us. We continue to evolve Eco-Drive to unlock new possibilities in design, performance, and sustainability for all Citizens of the World.'

Evolution and Innovation

Over the past five decades, Citizen has continuously refined Eco-Drive technology. Initially, approximately 80% of light needed to pass through the dial to power the movement. Today, advanced Eco-Drive models can operate with less than 15% light transmission, allowing for greater design flexibility. The technology has also seen significant advancements in power reserve, with some models now capable of running for up to a year on a single charge.

Cohen emphasized the company's focus on user experience and forward-thinking design. 'Ease of use, comfort, and the materials — we talk about everything that’s important to us. People don’t want to change batteries. People don’t want to keep changing the time on their watch; it needs to be convenient.' Citizen has integrated advanced materials like Super Titanium, which is lightweight, durable, and hypoallergenic, enhancing both comfort and longevity.

Citizen's innovation extends beyond core technology. The brand has explored unique dial materials, including structural color and traditional Washi paper, and has paired Eco-Drive with features like Satellite Wave GPS and Atomic Timekeeping. Furthermore, Citizen has extended its Eco-Drive technology into lifestyle partnerships, including collections with Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars.

The New Eco-Drive Photon Collection

To celebrate the 50th anniversary, Citizen is introducing two limited-edition Eco-Drive Photon timepieces. These watches feature the new Cal. E036 movement, offering a 365-day power reserve. The design is inspired by the science of light, with a layered dial incorporating a structural color film that creates dynamic visual effects. Crafted from lightweight, scratch-resistant Super Titanium, the limited-edition models come in silver-tone and black-and-gold variations, each engraved with a 50th anniversary logo and presented in a special commemorative box.

Looking ahead, Cohen expressed excitement about future developments. 'It really starts today. We’re putting the product [Citizen Photon] out there, which is made with super titanium and is super clean. This is where the new beginning starts. This is just a sneak peek; there’s plenty more in the pipeline for the future.'

Commitment to Sustainability and Community

Sustainability is deeply embedded in Citizen's ethos, although not heavily advertised. 'We’re a company that ensures we’re always doing things to make sure we’re thinking about the environment and all the people around us,' Cohen explained. 'Remember, Citizen is a watch for everyone, so we’re very sensitive to those people and what’s important to them.'

In recognition of its 50-year legacy, Citizen has launched an Earth Month microsite highlighting its ongoing support for organizations like Unite to Light. Through its membership with 1% for the Planet, Citizen donates solar lights to U.S. communities in need with every Eco-Drive purchase made during April.
