Renowned metalsmith Chris Ploof has launched his latest jewelry collection, aptly named ‘Modern Electrum,’ marking the first time a newly developed alloy of the same name is featured in a jewelry line. This innovative collection draws inspiration from the ancient world while utilizing cutting-edge metallurgical advancements, offering consumers unique, durable, and aesthetically pleasing pieces.

A Modern Interpretation of an Ancient Metal

Modern Electrum is a contemporary reimagining of electrum, a natural alloy of gold and silver that was highly prized in antiquity. Historically, electrum was used for adornment atop ancient structures and famously for coinage by civilizations such as the Turks, Greeks, and Romans. Its use was eventually phased out by the Romans in favor of pure gold and silver.

The newly created Modern Electrum alloy was developed and patented by Legor, an Italy-based metal company, at the behest of Diamonds de Canada. During the development process, Legor’s metallurgists discovered that the original ancient electrum contained platinum group metals. Consequently, the modern alloy is a sophisticated blend of gold, silver, palladium, and platinum. Notably, it is free from nickel and copper, ensuring it is a non-tarnishing metal.

Priced at $650 per ounce, Modern Electrum offers a competitive price point compared to other precious metals. As of the article's press time, gold was valued at $4,540 per ounce, platinum at $1,960, and silver at $76.

Ploof’s Unique Approach to Modern Electrum

Chris Ploof, celebrated for his expertise in hand-forged metals, was chosen as the first American designer to work with the Modern Electrum alloy. He expressed his enthusiasm for the material, stating, ‘I have always been a metal lover, but the story of Modern Electrum, with its incredible properties and its unique provenance, really excites me.’ Ploof highlighted the alloy’s ability to resist tarnishing, corrosion, and rust, while also possessing a ‘beautiful warmth’ and an ‘energy that is palpable.’

The ‘Modern Electrum’ collection features rings, earrings, bracelets, and pendants. Some designs are enhanced with diamonds from Diamonds de Canada’s Gahcho Kué mine, which exhibit a natural fluorescence. Benjamin King, CEO of Diamonds de Canada, commented on the synergy of the materials: ‘Natural diamonds with a naturally occurring ancient alloy combine to create a meaningful story for the modern consumer, offering attractive new price points and a cachet as brilliant as the diamonds themselves.’

Collection Details and Availability

The Modern Electrum collection by Chris Ploof Designs retails between $935 and $2,195. The collection is set to debut during Las Vegas Jewelry Market Week, with exhibitions planned at the CBG Show (May 26-27) at Caesars Palace and at JCK (May 29 - June 1) in the Endless Designs booth (#10055).

While Ploof’s current collection showcases the alloy in a white finish, Modern Electrum was developed with the potential for different finishes, including yellow, through specific electroplating techniques.

Beyond this collection, the Modern Electrum alloy itself will become available to other manufacturers in the future, expanding its reach within the industry.
